Running a WI takes a bit of effort, and making that effort are the committee. The people who are currently making the running of Brislington WI happen are:
All members of the committee are involved in Brislington WI's recruitment. They also share the hosting and other responsibilities for the monthly committee meetings. The Brislington committee all take part in setting up the room before each meeting. Committee members deliver information to the Federation and organise fund-raising activities. Other tasks include finding contacts for meetings and gathering materials for meetings.
"Hello, I'm Liz and I am the current president. I am married and child-free, and have lived in Brislington since 2008 with my supremely tolerant husband John. I work full-time and my job is all about trying to make science and engineering as interesting as possible to teenagers - it usually involves space or dinosaurs, but it can occasionally involve space dinosaurs. I love making stuff but have a very short attention span so my house is full of half-finished projects, from wonky works of art, through a mountain of cake tins and down to a tangled mess of giant knitting. What can I say, I'm a joiner-iner, the WI is perfect for me!"
Alison - Vice President
"Hi my name is Alison and I'm Brislington born and bred, and I love being part of the WI. I am head strong and outspoken which often gets me into trouble whoops ! My family is my everything."
"My name is Leanne Winter and I am currently the Treasurer for the Brislington WI. I am 35 years old, and have lived around South Bristol all of my life apart from the last year!
I first thought the WI was all about jams, baking and sewing machines, (all things I love by the way), but since being a member I have realised it's about a community of women, all from various backgrounds and all at different stages in their lives, coming together, learning together and sharing their interests.
I have made new friends, learned new skills and broadened my horizons a bit. I became a committee member because I'm a bit rubbish at sitting on the sidelines, and like to get involved! I enjoy knowing about Brislington WI from behind the scenes and being involved in getting excited about the things we are planning. I love sourcing and making gifts for the raffle & making cakes for everyone to (hopefully) enjoy!"
"Hi, I’m Arwen and I am Brislington Wi’s Secretary. I have lived in Brislington for the past 2 years with my partner. Originally from Australia I now work in Bath.
In any spare time I manage to get I enjoy love music, camping, walking, cooking, crafts and spending time with family and friends.
I joined Brislington Wi to get to meet people and have new experiences. I wasn't expecting to join the committee but couldn't stop myself getting involved, wanting to help make Brislington Wi a great group to be part of. The Secretary’s job is quite time consuming but thoroughly enjoyable. I love organising us, and knowing what is going on from the beginning (you could call it being nosey!).
We may be a reasonably new Wi but we are going from strength to strength and I am proud to be a part of it."
Gail- Committee Member/Scrapbook Extraordinaire
"My name is Gail and I have been on the Committee for the last year after promising to come along to just the one meeting! I have been a member of Brislington WI from the first meeting in May 2013. I am married and have two children who love getting involved with our family events. I have always lived locally and am very involved with our community. I have been a school governor for seven years, a member of the PTA and I also support St Peter's Methodist Church with their fundraising. I love to read and cross stitch. WI has encouraged me to try things I wouldn't normally try. I went camping for the first time in 2015 with 499 other WI ladies!
I have made some very good friends who I would not have met if I didn't come along to meetings. I prefer eating cake to making it!"
Janice - Committee Member/Events Manager
"My name is Janice and I am on the committee of BRIZ WI- I never intended to be on the committee. I joined Briz WI when it started in 2013, I thought I ought to start preparing for 'if I retire' and to open up new avenues. I like people 'generally' and thought this could give me a different outlook to life and the Brislington I already knew, especially after living in the same house for 42 years and working full time in research although through my job I probably know lots and lots of lovely local people.
At the last annual meeting 'I was told' :-) that I was to be a committee member (probably because I like to talk and have opinions- whoops). I was surprised but have thoroughly enjoyed being involved.
Every month we encounter someone or something new and all our ladies make for 'a really good bunch of flowers', so much diversity.
I enjoy every day of life and anything I can fit into it. Brislington WI is the added bonus."
Sue T- Vice treasurer
"I joined Briz WI in June 2014 shortly after moving to Bristol from Solihull, I was pleasantly surprised by the enthusiasm and pure commitment of this newly formed group, fresh in it’s style and approach, great speakers and so welcoming. It was an easy decision for me to join and make some lovely friends and now be on the committee. I love my family and home, gardening, crafts and we are part way through our house renovation project, life is full."

Nik - Committee Member/Events Manager
"Hello, I'm Nikki. I'm originally from South London and I've lived in South Bristol since 2003. In October 2015 I joined Brislington WI to meet new people and develop new interests. I received such a warm welcome that I decided to get involved with the committee.
I really enjoy my day job as a project manager. I work on projects that improve the lives of children and families in Bristol.
I'm a committed foodie and love eating out at all the amazing new (and old) restaurants in the city. One of my contributions to Briz WI is organising the Dining Club which I am totally over-excited about!"
April -Committee member
I have lived in Brislington all my life, I am a mum of two and work in a local Pre school. I joined WI when my friend Alison said, "come along I guarantee you will love it and learn something new at every meeting", she was right and I also got to meet some fantastic ladies along the way. I love anything crafty but my favourites are crochet and sewing and of course I love to chat which is how I have ended up on the committee.
Plus you, perhaps...?
There's plenty to do, and as Brislington WI grows then so will the committee. Any member of Brislington WI can join the committee, or form a sub-group, or volunteer to take on a role at the monthly meeting such as bringing the cakes or meeting people at the door. Let us know what you can offer and there will be a role the right size and shape for you! Have a chat to a committee member at the next monthly meeting to discuss how you can contribute.
