The Young Carers Support Centre is the charity our WI has chosen to support

Young carers are children and young people who look after someone in their family who has a disability, a long term illness, or is affected by mental ill health or substance misuse.
Young carers may look after parents, care for a brother or sister, or other relative. The average age of a young carer is 12 and they take on responsibilities normally only expected of an adult.
Young carers often take on responsibilities that are normally only expected of an adult and might include:
  • Practical tasks — like cooking, housework and shopping
  • Physical care — such as lifting, helping the person they care for to move about
  • Personal care — dressing, washing, helping with toileting needs and medication
  • Organising things — like money, appointments or collecting prescriptions
  • Looking after younger siblings — if their parent is too unwell
  • Emotional support — making sure they are OK
  • Interpreting and translating — due to a hearing or speech impairment or if English is not the family’s first language.
Many young carers achieve well at school and have lots of friends, as well as doing a fantastic job at home, but others are under a lot of strain and need extra support. Some young carers don’t realise they are a young carer – they are just looking after someone who needs help and getting on with what needs to be done.
